Americano
Imagine wanting a Negroni before it had been invented.
The Americano certainly isn't a cocktail for everyone: Campari is bitter, and vermouth can be an unfamiliar flavour, too. But if that's what you enjoy — bitterness, sweetness and a range of aromas in a wine base — this is the drink for you! And when someone wanted a little more kick over a hundred years ago, the bartender simply added gin: that's how the Negroni was born from the Americano.
Americano: classic, bitter and refreshing
Look around the cocktail world and you'll often find that one recipe is based on another, which is based on another … you get the idea. The Americano, thought to have first been served around 1860 at Gaspare Campari’s Caffè Campari in Milan, is one such recipe. It was based on the Milano-Torino, which in turn was based on the Torino-Milano. Both combine Campari and sweet vermouth.
