The screwdriver is in almost none of my cocktail books. However so many cocktail recipes build on it. It simple to make and let's you get started easily in the cocktail making process.
Origins of the screwdriver cocktail
As with so many cocktails it seems that this one, most certainly due to its simple nature, has no real inventor or creator to it which could be named and pinpointed. What seems to be agreed upon is that it appeared first during the 40s, probably in a situation where a juice needed a bit of an upgrade if you know what I mean.
With the rising popularity of vodka in the 1950s the drink was slowly getting more and more popular, certainly, as one can imagine, due to its simple recipe.
Chilled is a must
This drink certainly is most enjoyable as a cold drink. The summer months make for a great time to enjoy it. Southern hemisphere folks get your ingredients chilled right away. But even when winter hits and you feel that the vitamin dose needs a tasty boost you have come to the right place to pick up a screwdriver.
The warm variant without ice is something I do not recommend though. It just tastes boozy and is half the fun to my palate.
Freshly squeezed, optional
Although it certainly is a totally different drink when you use freshly squeezed orange juice, it does work however with a good bottled or tetra packed juice. Should you use the fresh variant you might consider straining the juice through a strainer.
